Papua, MediaHabema - The Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) remain steadfast in their commitment to supporting peace and prosperity in Papua. Guided by Presidential Instruction No. 9 of 2020, the TNI’s mission involves ensuring security, assisting local governments with public services, and fostering inclusive communication with all stakeholders in the region. Selasa (29/10/2024).
“Security is the foundation of development in Papua, and it remains our top priority, ” said Colonel Arh Yogi Nugroho, Commander of the HABEMA Media Task Force, in a statement to the press.
TNI’s presence in Papua is not just about security it’s about humanitarian action. A key example is the evacuation of civilians, health workers, and infants from Alama after a tragic incident on August 5, 2024, when Glen Malcolm Conning, a New Zealand pilot, was murdered by the Free Papua Movement (OPM). Glen, employed by PT Intan Angkasa Air Service, became a victim of the violence that has hindered Papua’s development.
Without waiting for formal requests, TNI forces acted swiftly, evacuating survivors from the area. “This evacuation was purely a humanitarian initiative, ” emphasized Colonel Yogi.
Another significant operation was the successful rescue of Susi Air pilot Captain Phillip Mark Mehrtens, who had been held hostage by the OPM. The pilot was freed on September 21, 2024, through a coordinated mission that highlighted TNI’s commitment to peace.
Colonel Yogi affirmed that TNI and Polri (the Indonesian National Police) will continue their joint efforts to maintain a safe and conducive environment in Papua. “Our mission is to support the government’s development goals and ensure that the people of Papua can live and thrive in peace, ” he said.
With security as the backbone of progress, TNI’s actions are aligned with the broader goal of accelerating welfare development in the region. Through cooperation with local governments and communities, TNI is determined to build a peaceful, prosperous Papua for the future.
